Sleepy Eye Auction Market

Not my words, but so amazingly said it needed to be shared. For so many of us, this is a good description of our lives, the feelings we go through when we watch the animals we have put our blood, sweat and tears into move on to the next stage. I know it couldn't be more true for our sellers at yesterday's bull sale. Thank you for all your hard work and for giving us the opportunity to help market those amazing animals.

Yesterday, we said goodbye.
The last of the 2023 calf crop is east bound and down for the auction.
The morning went without a hitch.
We hustled and moved and sorted and loaded.
With a holler and a whoop, the trucks left.
All that remained, was silence.
No, the yard isn’t empty.
The replacement bulls and heifers who made the cut, are still here.
And we are now bustling with sets of twins who need extra groceries, a cow who prolapsed, a heifer who threw out her calf bed while calving a couple nights ago.
But for just a moment, we stand collectively still, nothing to hear but the prairie winds whipping through the yard, carrying plenty of dirt with it.
**********
I always get choked up a little. I am quiet, emotional, reflective, grateful, prayerful.
It’s hard to find the words that explain how it feels to take a product from inception to sale. Indeed, our hands have touched every one of these animals that leave.
They wear us on their sleeve. When they stand in the sale ring, it is OUR reputation on the line.
We are deeply proud of what we raise, and the work we do. We aren’t sorry to see them go as we open the new chapter of 2024.
Even so, they do take part of us with them.
A little sliver goes, each and every year.
For they are part of the sum that makes us who we are . Perhaps why so many of us accidentally wrap up ourselves in this identity that leaves us feeling bereft if we ever consider changing careers or looking at retirement.
This is who we are, the good, bad, and ugly.
For it all, let me remember to be grateful.
